Liturgy and Worship

Sacrament Celebrations - Music Ministry - Family Mass Committee

Altar Servers assist the priest and deacons during weekday, weekend and special liturgies. Students, boys and girls 4th grade and older as well as adult men and women may become altar servers. We presently need more servers to cover all the Masses here at St. Anthony's, so please think about joining us in this important ministry. Call Deacon John in the Parish Center to join and sign up for training at 764-2513.

Eucharistic Ministers assist the Presider in the distribution of the Eucharist at all parish Eucharistic liturgies. Prior to being commissioned as a Eucharistic Minister, parishioners must be approved by the Pastor and attend Diocesan and parish training. Diocesan training is held in October and April of each year.

Homebound/Hospital Eucharistic Ministers bring the Eucharist and visit with parishioners who are homebound because of illness or other personal needs. Additional Diocesan training is required for those who wish to minister to the homebound.

Lectors proclaim the Word at the daily and weekend liturgies during the year. Lectors must be approved by the Pastor. Diocesan and parish training is required.

Ushers assist as Ministers of Hospitality at weekend and special liturgies by greeting people, seating people, taking up the collection.

Music Ministry

The Music Ministry is a diverse group of people who come together to worship in song and to help others in the congregation worship and pray. Professional musicians are joined by the adult choir, children’s choir, youth rock Mass group, and Spanish choir to enhance our worship together.

The volunteer members come from many backgrounds, both with and without previous instruction or experience, but all have a desire to share their love of music with others. Additionally, they help with organizing and distributing sheet music, organizing and setting up for liturgies and planning social events.

The Adult Choir typically practices once a week on Thursdays at 7:30 PM and sings at the 11:00 AM Mass on Sundays (September to June), on holy days, during the Easter Triduum, and at other special liturgies. They also participate in the Oceanside Interfaith Thanksgiving Service and perform a Christmas Concert, usually in the week between Christmas and New Years. Their music ranges from ancient chants to contemporary liturgical music, including pieces from the Oregon Catholic Press, the Gregorian Institute of America, the St. Louis Jesuits and Weston Priory.

The Children’s Choir sings twice a month at the 9:30 AM Family Mass. Many members also participate in the annual Christmas Pageant.
The Youth Rock Mass features instrumentalists and singers, ages 14-18, and are incorporated into the Youth Ministry of the parish.

The Spanish Choir, a part of the Hispanic Community, sings at the Spanish Mass, held at 12:45 in the Sacred Heart Chapel. For information, or to join, please speak to the members after the 12:45 Mass.

Conclusion

Is the choir for you? How do you know if you should join? Often these calls come from other people; so if you enjoy singing, or anyone has ever turned to you after Mass and said, “You sing beautifully; you should be in the choir,” then perhaps you should! To determine if you have a talent that could be used in the Music Ministry, or for more information, please call Danny Gibbons, the Director of Music, for an appointment at 516-764-0048, Ext 2505.

Family Mass Committee

The Family Mass Committee is a group of dedicated individuals who meet twice a month from September through June to plan the weekly 9:30 AM Sunday liturgy for families and children.

The purpose of the committee is to enhance participation in the family liturgy as one grows in a deeper understanding of living as a community “centered in the Eucharist”. Activities are designed to engage the children and families through participatory homilies, dramatizations and short skits. The committee also prepares ongoing and meaningful liturgical projects during Advent and Lent to enhance family experiences during the week.

The committee welcomes anyone interested in planning the Family Mass to join in their planning sessions.

Each Sunday following the 9:30 Mass there is a Family Mass Coffee Hour for families to gather in fellowship. Coffee Hour Kid's Club meets monthly during this time.

Please call 764-0048 Ext 2516 for more information.
